4B hair has a Z-shaped pattern with sharp angles rather than a defined curl or coil, which makes it especially sensitive to the balance between moisture and protein. Too much moisture and the hair feels limp, gummy, or "mushy." Too much protein and it feels stiff, straw-like, and prone to snapping. Getting this balance right solves more problems than any single product ever will.
How to Tell Which One You Need
Stretch a strand of wet hair gently. If it stretches and doesn't spring back, or feels weak and gummy, it likely needs protein. If it feels dry, stiff, or breaks without stretching much at all, it likely needs moisture. Hair rarely needs both at the same time.

Straw-like texture, increased shedding, and a rough feel even right after conditioning are signs protein treatments have been overused. The fix is a moisture-focused deep conditioner for the next few wash days, with protein paused entirely.

Most 4B routines do well with a moisturizing deep conditioner most wash days, and a protein treatment every four to six weeks — more often if heat styling or coloring is part of the routine, less often otherwise.
