How Often Should You Deep Condition Curly Hair?

Deep conditioning can improve softness and manageability, but doing it more often is not always better. Build a schedule around your hair's actual signals.

For many curly and coily routines, deep conditioning every one to two weeks is a useful starting point. The right schedule depends on how often you cleanse, whether you color or heat-style your hair, and how the hair feels between wash days. A deep conditioner should leave hair softer and easier to detangle; it should not leave it limp, coated, or gummy.

Signs You May Need It More Often

Dryness that returns quickly after a regular conditioner, difficult detangling, or rough ends can be signs that a richer conditioning session would help. Hair exposed to regular heat, color, sun, or frequent swimming may also benefit from more attention to moisture.

Signs to Scale Back

If wet hair stretches too far without bouncing back, feels unusually soft but weak, or loses definition right after conditioning, more moisture may not be the answer. A light protein-containing treatment can be more useful in that moment. This moisture-protein guide explains what to watch for.

Make the Time Count

Apply deep conditioner in sections after cleansing, distribute it from mid-lengths to ends, and leave it on according to the product directions. Heat is optional; consistency and thorough rinsing matter more than making the treatment last for hours.

Do Not Condition Over Buildup

If products are sitting on the hair, a deep conditioner may simply sit on top too. Clarify first when hair feels coated, then follow with a moisturizing treatment.
